A special Limited first edition/first printing preceding the trade edition in unread Fine condition, SIGNED by author Philip Roth.
1983 Franklin Library Limited Signed First Edition.The Franklin Library Series features include: Each volume is fully bound in genuine hand-cut leather, which has been selected for quality of grain and texture. The individually designed ornamentation of each cover is impressed into the leather in 22KT gold. The front cover, back cover, and the spine are also worked in gold. In addition, the spine of each book is hubbed with raised horizontal ridges, in the tradition of fine bookbindings. The books are hand-bound by The Franklin Library’s own bindery in New York City, The Sloves Organization, Ltd. The endsheets are of fine marbled paper or moire fabric, in colors that compliment the bindings. The pages are of the highest quality paper, specially milled for long life and beauty. The pages are edged on all three sides with 22KT gold, for beauty and protection. The pages are gathered into separate “signatures” and then individually thread-sewn into each book (Smythe-Sewn). A ribbon page-marker, coordinated to the cover, is bound into each volume.
The third novel from Roth to feature Nathan Zuckerman as the main character. Facing middle age, an undiagnosable pain in his neck keeps him from writing and in a burst of nostalgia and ambition, Zuckerman resolves to return to the University of Chicago, his alma mater, to pursue medical school.
